How do you transform a collection of stand-alone music huts into a comprehensive centre for music practice, rehearsal and performance?
The Banff Centre Music Program originally occupied a variety of small-scale spaces within existing buildings and stand-alone structures scattered throughout the Banff Centre site. The creation of the Music & Sound Building consolidated the program and provided a strong focus for the Program.
Excellent acoustics were achieved in all spaces very economically by the early inclusion of a specialty acoustic consultant. Being located in a National Park, there was a strong mandate to minimize the impact of the building on the natural landscape. In order to achieve this, the building was designed to sit over a new parkade sited on an existing parking lot. The building was oriented to offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
