New design phase advances vision for an integrated recreation, learning, and community hub in Calgary's west end.
GEC Architecture has been selected to design the new YMCA West District Recreation Facility & Library, marking an important milestone in the development of a new community destination for Calgary's growing west side.
Developed in partnership with YMCA Calgary and Calgary Public Library, the proposed facility would bring recreation, learning, wellness, and community gathering spaces together in one integrated destination. The project represents an innovative approach to community infrastructure, leveraging private, philanthropic, and government investment to address growing demand for recreation and library services in West Calgary.
As prime consultant, GEC will work closely with project partners to advance the facility through the next phase of planning and design, helping to shape a vision that reflects community needs today and into the future.
"We're excited to help create a place that reflects the unique character of West District and supports the everyday moments that make communities," says Andrew Tankard, Partner at GEC Architecture. "The best spaces are shaped by the people who use them, and we're looking forward to listening, learning, and designing alongside our partners and the community."
GEC brings extensive experience designing recreation, educational, and community-focused facilities across Canada. The firm's portfolio includes several projects familiar to Calgarians, including the Remington YMCA in Quarry Park, WinSport's Markin MacPhail Centre, the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary, the MNP Community & Sport Centre Redevelopment, and the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.
The proposed facility will be located on land donated by Truman along Broadcast Avenue SW in West District, across from Radio Park. While the project remains in the planning stages, the current design phase will help inform future funding decisions and project approvals.
Once complete, the facility is envisioned as a welcoming place where residents can gather, learn, stay active, and connect, strengthening community life in one of Calgary's fastest-growing areas.
