This past Friday, GEC was on-site with fellow Calgarians for the much-anticipated re-opening of the Glenmore Dam! Years of careful planning, design and construction have gone into the rehabilitation of this remarkable and historic Calgary landmark and critical piece of municipal infrastructure. The refurbished bridge deck features a much-improved pedestrian and cyclist experience, relinking the regional pathway system in a way that is accessible to users of all abilities while adding breathtaking views to their daily commute.
Originally constructed in 1932, the rehabilitation of the 87-year-old structure will extend the lifespan of the structure, enhance flood protection and increase the storage capacity for drinking water in the reservoir. The upgraded bridge deck has been widened and the appearance enhanced to improve pathway access and provide pedestrians with unobstructed views of the mountains to the west and the downtown skyline to the northeast. The original character and architectural detailing of the bridge have been retained, while the deteriorating concrete decks were replaced and new hoist gate equipment and steel gates installed.
