Andrew Tankard

Partner

Andrew is a Partner at GEC and a registered architect in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Since joining the firm in 2004, he’s played a leading role in designing sport, recreation, education, and community buildings. He holds Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture degrees from the University of Waterloo.

With more than two decades at GEC, Andrew’s work is driven by a deep belief in what public spaces can do—how they bring people together, promote wellness, and reflect the identity of a community. From arenas and aquatic centres to schools and infrastructure like wastewater treatment plants, his projects are as diverse as the places they serve. What ties them together is their benefit to their communities.

He’s energized working closely with clients to define their vision and set the right strategic direction. Whether it’s a high-performance athletic venue or a community rec centre, Andrew sees each building as a container for the life that happens inside—and a reflection of the community it supports.

Known for being steady and strategic, Andrew brings a blend of focus and humility to every team. He’s guided by the belief that great ideas can come from anywhere and makes space for others to contribute meaningfully. Donuts usually appear in meetings along with clear thinking, structure, and an eye on the end goal.

Outside of work, Andrew is happiest in the mountains—hiking, biking, skiing, and camping year-round. He also harbours a lifelong obsession with castles. If he weren’t an architect, he’d be scanning ancient sites with a drone, turning them into scaled wooden models, and slowly filling a bookcase with everything from Roman ruins to Gothic cathedrals—each one a reminder of what people have built, and what still endures.

For Andrew, the real success of architecture lies in how well it serves. His favourite projects—from the Humane Society to the Canmore Nordic Centre—aren’t just buildings. They’re lived-in, loved, and built to last.
