Gary Mundy

Partner

Gary brings over 30 years of experience to his role as GEC’s transportation sector lead, including 23 years designing systems that move people and cities forward. He holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Manitoba—an academic path that laid the foundation for his deep, ongoing engagement in transit, aviation, and industrial projects across Canada.

A registered architect in Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, Gary brings strategic foresight and a community-first mindset to every challenge. He’s helped shape some of the country’s most transformative public infrastructure—from Calgary’s 7th Avenue LRT corridor (a project he began as an intern and completed as a partner) to the Calgary International Airport and major LRT lines across Edmonton. What drives him is simple: designing places that not only function beautifully but are embraced by the people who use them.

Known by colleagues as focused, thoughtful, and unafraid to ask hard questions, Gary is always chasing the bigger impact—how can this design improve the city? Serve the community better? Spark long-term growth? He’s especially passionate about the early stages of design, where bold ideas take root, and the development phase, where creativity meets precision.

Gary believes every team interaction is a chance to mentor, and every client meeting should reflect their preferred pace and style. His approach is practical and personalized, grounded in decades of experience and shaped by a willingness to keep learning.

Outside of work, you’ll find him skiing (downhill and cross-country), running, or travelling with his wife and two daughters. Originally from a small town in northern Manitoba, Gary moved to Calgary 30 years ago to pursue architecture—and maybe become a ski bum on the side. A physics enthusiast at heart, he brings curiosity to everything he does, whether it’s improving urban conditions through design or logging his ‘DPA’ (daily physical activity), a ritual coined by his daughter.
