For decades, the North Plaza at the Alberta Legislature Grounds has been a stage for Albertans’ memories—hosting Canada Day picnics, graduation photos, and countless family milestones. Its fountains and open spaces are woven into both personal albums and the province’s shared civic story.
After more than 50 years, the plaza was ready for renewal. Working alongside Janet Rosenberg & Studio, our team helped shape a redesign that honours the site’s history while inviting future generations to make it their own. The new design draws inspiration from Alberta’s landscapes, with granite boulders tracing the path of a watercourse animated by mist, spray, and streams. Native alpine and prairie plants root the space in place, while integrated art reflects the province’s cultural and geological heritage.
This is a space built for everyday belonging. Accessible wading and reflecting pools invite all ages to cool off in summer, while built-in seating and shaded areas encourage lingering, gathering, and quiet reflection. Whether for seasonal programming or spontaneous play, the plaza is designed to welcome everyone.
Through collaboration and care, the North Plaza has been reimagined as both durable and delightful—a resilient civic space at the heart of Alberta’s democracy, ready to hold the memories of generations to come.
“I am thrilled visitors from across Alberta, Canada, and the world can experience this first-rate public infrastructure this summer. Thank you to everyone involved who made this project a reality for everyone to enjoy for generations."
