This striking new workplace brings science, sustainability, and collaboration together to support the teams who safeguard Calgary’s water every day.

A thoughtful renewal of Calgary’s water testing and operations campus, designed for safety, sustainability, and collaboration.

At Calgary’s Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant, a major transformation is underway to ensure the city’s water systems stay safe, efficient, and ready for the future. The new Bonnybrook Centre will be a modern laboratory and administration building, supporting critical water quality testing and regulatory work under Alberta’s Environmental Protection Act. This three-storey facility will replace outdated buildings that no longer meet today’s needs or safety standards. It’s part of a larger multi-phase project that includes upgrading key site infrastructure and making the whole campus work better for the people who keep Calgary’s water clean.

The path to this new centre hasn’t been without challenges. Construction began several years ago but paused when the project faced significant hurdles. In 2023, GEC stepped in alongside RJC Engineering to lead a careful review, keeping what worked and redesigning what didn’t. This fresh approach secured new funding and brought renewed clarity and confidence to the project.

Beyond its function, the Bonnybrook Centre is also aiming for LEED Silver certification, incorporating sustainable design strategies, zero-carbon best practices, and climate resilience measures to meet long-term environmental goals. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with completion expected by late 2029—marking an important step in Calgary’s commitment to safe, healthy, and sustainable water infrastructure for generations ahead.

Designed with people in mind, the Bonnybrook Centre will feature bright, collaborative lab and office spaces and use durable materials built to last. It will bring together teams from Water Quality & Regulatory Assurance, Wastewater Treatment, and Utility Delivery, creating a close-knit hub focused on maintaining Calgary’s water and wastewater systems. Accessibility and universal design are key, making sure the building welcomes everyone who works there.
