Every individual deserves a safe, permanent place to call home—a foundation upon which to build a better life.

The City of Edmonton recognized the critical need to expand its supply of long-term supportive housing to help prevent and end homelessness. This led to the vital Canora Supportive Housing project.

Our primary challenge was designing a highly durable, energy-efficient building with 63 move-in ready units (including nine fully barrier-free homes) on a site adjacent to the West Valley LRT line. This new five-storey residence needed to seamlessly integrate into an established residential community, maintaining privacy for existing homeowners while creating a welcoming environment for its new residents.

Our solution centred on thoughtful, resident-focused design. We designed a building that not only met stringent accessibility and energy performance standards but also carefully considered its neighbours. Through sensitive siting and landscaping, we minimized the impact on adjacent single-family homes and the nearby Mill Creek Ravine. Key design elements, such as the placement of entrances and balconies, foster a connection to the neighbourhood while ensuring resident privacy.

This project is defined by its commitment to inclusion and long-term resilience. It provides permanent homes with leases, on-site services, and universally accessible common areas—offering stability and support to vulnerable individuals. Our detailed coordination with the City, utility providers, and Homeward Trust has kept the ambitious $27.7M project on track for completion in early 2026. Canora Supportive Housing will ultimately provide 63 residents with safety, belonging, and a supportive environment, strengthening Edmonton’s vision for an inclusive, accessible future.
