Designed for every level of activity, from varsity training to casual recreation.

The David Braley Athletic Centre brings together students, athletes, and the Hamilton community in a flexible, welcoming environment designed to meet real needs. With areas for focused training, group exercise, and everyday recreation, it supports a wide spectrum of campus life while fostering connection and engagement.

Located at the heart of McMaster University’s West Hamilton campus, the centre combines athletics, recreation, and wellness under one roof. A 200-metre indoor track, double gymnasium, multi-purpose studios, and training labs accommodate varsity programs and casual users alike, while flexible spaces support rehabilitation sessions, group exercise, and other programs.

Collaboration shaped the design at every stage. Partnering alongside Garwood-Jones + Hanham Architects, GEC worked closely with students, athletes, campus staff, and the student union to ensure the facility meets real needs, including quiet corners for stretching and recovery, team training areas, and adaptable spaces for a variety of programs. The building integrates seamlessly with the pedestrian-friendly campus, making it accessible and easy to use throughout the day.

Energy-efficient systems, waterless urinals, and roof-drain water reuse reduce environmental impact while supporting a comfortable, healthy environment for daily use. These measures contributed to a 29.2 percent reduction in energy consumption and LEED certification.

Alongside the adjacent Ron Joyce Stadium, the David Braley Athletic Centre strengthens McMaster’s athletic precinct. It supports performance, wellness, and community engagement, reflecting the university’s commitment to thoughtful campus planning and GEC’s focus on creating spaces that meet the needs of those who use them.

“These facilities have transformed McMaster’s ability to host national level competitions while maintaining open access for the entire community.”
