Walk across history: the refurbished Glenmore Dam invites Calgarians to experience sweeping skyline views while securing the city’s water.

A renewed landmark that protects the city and connects communities.

For nearly a century, the Glenmore Dam has helped shape Calgary—quietly ensuring clean drinking water, managing floods, and standing as a familiar landmark in the heart of the city. Originally built in the 1930s, its distinctive arches and Art Deco details reflect an era of optimism and civic ambition. Today, it continues to serve Calgarians as both vital infrastructure and a part of the city’s shared heritage.

After the devastating floods of 2013, the City took action to strengthen the dam’s capacity and resilience. Aging timber gates were replaced with new steel ones that can hold an additional two metres of water—boosting flood protection and water storage for more than half a million people. A new hoist system, reinforced concrete, and critical underground upgrades were added to support these changes, ensuring the dam is ready for the future.

At the same time, the project reimagined the dam as a public space—transforming its bridge deck from a vehicle route into a wide, welcoming pathway for cyclists and pedestrians. What was once a utilitarian crossing is now part of Calgary’s regional trail network, connecting neighbourhoods and offering stunning views of the reservoir, river valley, and city skyline. Design elements like low-profile lighting and precast balustrades were chosen to respect the dam’s original architecture while enhancing safety and access.

This renewal project is about more than structural upgrades. It reflects how smart, people-focused design can extend the life of critical infrastructure while enriching daily life. The Glenmore Dam remains a pillar of Calgary’s past—and a lasting investment in its health, safety, and connected future.
