A unique student residence shaped by culture, connection, and care.

At Okanagan College in Kelowna, citxʷ kl snmymyaʔtn (Home for School) is more than a residence. It’s a place where students are welcomed, supported, and invited to belong.

Created in close partnership with the Westbank First Nation, the six-storey, wood-frame building was designed to feel like community from the moment you arrive. Light-filled gathering spaces, shared kitchens, and outdoor areas invite students to come together, while every detail—from Indigenous artworks to quiet corners for reflection—honours both culture and care.

The residence itself is alive with Syilx Okanagan stories. A feather motif by artist Clint George shades the south facade, weaving beauty and purpose together, while carved story poles by artist Les Louis stand as guardians in the main gathering space, snullustn, or “a place to gather.” These elements are more than art—they’re expressions of belonging, reconciliation, and respect.

Sustainability is also woven into its fabric. Mass timber construction brings warmth and authenticity, supporting British Columbia’s wood-first policy while balancing environmental responsibility with cost-effective choices. The result is a space that feels natural, welcoming, and true to its place.

Every aspect of citxʷ kl snmymyaʔtn was shaped with intention: to nurture connection, honour Indigenous Knowledge, and provide a home where students feel seen, supported, and inspired. Here, every student has space to learn, gather, and grow.

“By naming this student housing building with the Syilx name we are taking meaningful steps toward healing and strengthening our connection to the Indigenous Peoples whose lands we are on. This building is more than a structure—it’s a place where students will find a home away from home, where they will grow, learn, and contribute to the future of our communities.”
