As the rich and diverse communities in Calgary’s northeast quadrant continue to grow, so does the need for places to play, gather, and connect. The City identified a significant gap in recreation infrastructure in this area, particularly for cricket and multi-sport field access.
In response, the Northeast Athletic Complex (NEAC) brings indoor and outdoor recreation together with Calgary’s first dedicated competition cricket pitch, multi-sport fields, a year-round indoor fieldhouse, and spaces to gather, giving the growing community a new place to come together.
At the heart of the Complex is signature competition-level cricket field, framed on its western side by a sweeping canopy and a sculpted berm. The landscape rises from the civic plaza to create natural places to sit, watch, and take in the match, with shade from the afternoon sun. Here, the landscape becomes part of the experience, with accessible seating offering different ways to gather and experience the action.
Adjacent to the main building are two integrated outdoor turf fields supporting soccer, cricket, and other sports, allowing for matches and tournaments continuously from Spring to Fall. Inside, a year-round turf field and flexible spaces provide a much-needed venue for recreation, events, and activities throughout the year.
High-performance building systems, photovoltaic arrays, and climate-responsive design are helping to create a resilient facility that can adapt over time while supporting the people who use it. Together, these spaces will provide Calgary with a new destination for regional and national sporting events.
Spaces supporting players and fans between the fields are a unique design feature of the NEAC. A central civic plaza and network of pathways connects the fields, fieldhouse, and recreation areas, making movement easy and intuitive between activities, meeting up with others, or catching the next game. Universal access is woven throughout, with barrier-free circulation, intuitive wayfinding, and spaces for different ages and abilities, creating a welcoming destination for the whole community.
The Northeast Athletic Complex will be a new common ground for all Calgarians. It will create new opportunities to participate, connect, and belong closer to home.
