A beloved green sanctuary reimagined for a new generation.

For more than four decades, Paul Kane Park has been a quiet refuge in Edmonton’s Oliver neighbourhood—an intimate space where city life gives way to still water, winding paths, and shaded corners of rest. When it came time to renew the park, our vision was guided by a single goal: honour the spirit people had always loved, while creating a landscape that could thrive for decades to come.

At the heart of the redesign is water—something the community asked us to protect and celebrate. A new marble fountain now feeds a slender runnel that slips under a bridge before reaching the restored pond, inviting visitors to follow its sound and flow. Native plantings and carefully reconstructed edges bring new life to the water’s edge, supporting biodiversity while keeping the pond’s tranquil character intact.

Around it, a flexible plaza welcomes gatherings and events, while tucked-away wood decks and seating areas invite quiet reflection. Every material—stone, wood, plant life—was chosen to reinforce the park’s identity as an oasis within the urban core.

Working closely with the City and community, we balanced memory with renewal, ensuring the park remains both familiar and fresh. Today, Paul Kane Park is more than a place to pause—it is a restored landmark, an intentional escape, and a sanctuary where nature and community meet.

Beneath leafy trees, visitors gather by the pond, enjoying a rare moment of stillness against Edmonton’s bustling skyline.

“...this is landscape imitating art, like a Roberto Burle Marx painting.”
