The redevelopment of Stadium LRT Station is more than an upgrade—it’s a comeback story. Once known as one of the city’s toughest transit spots, it has been reimagined into a welcoming, accessible, and vibrant public space that reflects the community it serves.
The new design opens the station to the city around it. Barriers have been replaced with at-grade access and a public plaza that links directly to Commonwealth Stadium, making it easy for people to move between transit, neighbourhoods, and civic life. Whether commuting, attending events, or simply passing through, the space now invites people to move freely, comfortably, and safely.
Beyond improving transit, the project lays the groundwork for a more sustainable and connected Edmonton. Integrated bus facilities, pedestrian routes, and links to the River Valley encourage active transportation and support future infill and mixed-use development.
But perhaps the greatest transformation is social. By prioritizing openness, visibility, and dignity, Stadium LRT Station has gone from a place of enforcement to one of inclusion. It reflects the principles of truth and reconciliation, creating a space where everyone can feel welcome and respected.
In 2024, this renewal was recognized nationally with the RAIC National Urban Design Award in Urban Architecture—a testament to how thoughtful design can strengthen communities, foster connection, and spark pride in public spaces.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to rethink the entire design. By opening up sightlines and encouraging more foot traffic nearby, we’ve made the space feel safer and more connected. Since the redesign, we’ve seen a 50% reduction in calls for service—it’s a great example of how safety, accessibility, and urban integration can work together.”
