More than a transit stop, the renewal of Stampede Station creates a landmark gateway—connecting people to Calgary’s Cultural and Entertainment District with clarity and care.

A people-first transformation of Calgary’s Stampede Station into a vibrant, accessible urban gateway.

The redeveloped Stampede Station reimagines Calgary’s LRT corridor as more than just infrastructure—it becomes a vibrant connector that ties downtown Calgary, the Beltline, and Stampede Park together. What was once a dividing edge between communities is now a welcoming gateway that reflects shared values of connection, accessibility, and inclusivity.

The redesign puts people first—prioritizing clear, safe, and intuitive pedestrian movement where it matters most. Transit infrastructure should feel like part of the city—not separate from it. It should be walkable, welcoming, and built to adapt over time. Here, every design choice was guided by five key principles: universal accessibility, safety, comfort, convenience, and sustainability.

New at-grade crossings at 14 and 17 Avenues, along with clear visual and physical links across the site, help make it easier for people to move between the city’s core and the Cultural and Entertainment District.

Because Stampede Station is a central piece of Calgary’s transit network, it had to stay operational throughout construction. To keep things moving, the work was carefully phased, including a temporary “shoofly” track and strategic weekend shutdowns. Pedestrian access was a top priority the whole way through, even as connections were being rebuilt.

To reduce future disruption, we used durable materials and flexible infrastructure, designed with long-term resiliency in mind. This project is about more than transit. It’s a reinvestment in how people connect with their city. By improving accessibility, restoring community links, and creating a more welcoming public space, the new Stampede Station strengthens Calgary’s core and lays the groundwork for future growth.

Where once there was a barrier, the renewed Stampede Station now offers a clear, accessible path into Calgary’s cultural core.

“Replacing the elevated design with street-level, accessible platforms and removing obstacles like the Plus 15 walkway has dramatically improved safety, sightlines, and ease of access.
