The Vecova Centre for All Abilities reimagines what an inclusive community space can be—one that brings together people of all abilities to move, connect, and belong.

As a trusted Calgary charity since 1969, Vecova has long supported individuals with disabilities through programs, research, and advocacy. Their original 1960s building, though beloved, could no longer meet the needs of a growing and diverse community. The new facility was envisioned as a welcoming, purpose-built home for inclusion: a place where recreation, employment, rehabilitation, and social innovation come together under one roof.

Designed in close partnership with Vecova, the Centre expresses inclusivity through openness and connection. The layout is non-hierarchical, ensuring no one activity or group feels separated or secondary. At its heart is a central Welcome Hub—a bright, unprogrammed gathering space that anchors the building and helps visitors easily navigate the pools, gymnasia, fitness centre, and multi-purpose rooms beyond. Every design choice, from the universal change rooms to clear sightlines and intuitive wayfinding, supports dignity, comfort, and independence for all.

Architecturally, the Centre stands as a beacon of accessibility and sustainability. A series of smaller, sculpted pavilions breaks down the building’s scale and brings natural light deep inside, while transparent facades reveal the vibrant life within. Targeted to be one of Canada’s first zero-carbon recreation centres, the design surpasses national energy standards by 25%, underscoring Vecova’s commitment to environmental and social resilience. More than a facility, the Vecova Centre for All Abilities embodies a vision of community where everyone is invited to participate—creating a space that celebrates diversity, fosters connection, and reflects Calgary’s values of equity, inclusion, and care.

“GEC Architecture did a beautiful job of taking our vision and guiding principles for this facility to serve people with disabilities along with the broader community and translating it into this amazing inclusive design.
