Connecting people, businesses and open spaces revitalizing the urban landscape.
The original corridor could not have anticipated the number of people the 7th Avenue LRT would serve. As Calgary grew, the stations quickly became overcrowded, and the stations did not integrate with the streetscape. The result was a fragmented urban environment, over-crowded at peak times and void of street life at all others. To reinvigorate the corridor, GEC Architecture worked with the City of Calgary to completely refurbish the 15-block long 7th Avenue Transit Corridor.
The redesign links people, businesses, trains and buses in a vibrant urban corridor. The corridor includes 11 new four-car stations, a new traction power system, improved infrastructure for the accommodation of buses, and an upgraded urban landscape with new interfaces to adjacent buildings. We completed this work under full revenue service over a decade, transforming the face of downtown Calgary.
