Unifying Airdrie Transit operations and personnel.
The City of Airdrie engaged GEC for the design of a new transit storage and maintenance facility that combined a vehicle storage and maintenance garage with administrative office space. The building serves two distinct functions but has been designed to bring workers together in centrally located spaces, such as kitchens and meeting rooms, as way to create social cohesion and encourage collaboration.
The Airdrie Transit Operations Centre has two maintenance bays for articulated buses, and one for buses up to 40 feet. Designed for direct drive-through access, the bays incorporate numerous safety features to prevent damage to both vehicles and the building. Concrete filled bollards, interior curbs at all exterior walls and landscaped features around the building exterior help to create a durable design that will minimize operational costs into the future. These feature work in conjunction with the 20-metre column-free circulation space to permit turning inside the building and safe storage of the buses.
This project brings together all of Airdrie’s transit facilities and represents the city’s commitment to transit today and into the future. With a careful eye on budget, our design accommodates workspace for administration, operations, and maintenance staff – bringing employees together under one roof and making Airdrie Transit a great place to work.
