For over four decades, the Stadium LRT Station in Edmonton has been a critical passenger terminal for sports and events at Commonwealth Stadium, the Joe Clarke Athletic Grounds, Clarke Stadium, the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre and for the surrounding community. Built in 1978, the station was in need of repair and modification as passenger usage continued to grow. GEC is taking this traditionally-designed light rail transit (LRT) station and is redeveloping it into a modern inter-modal transit hub by closing off the existing underground concourse, replacing the grade-separated access and centre-loaded platform with easily accessible side-loading platforms, installing a new canopy with a gantry design, engaging the adjacent bus loop more directly, and integrating the station with the surrounding urban community through transit-oriented development principles of safety, security, comfort and accessibility.
Stadium LRT Station will remain fully operational through construction and is scheduled for completion in January 2022.
