Alberta Ballet Company and School

Synthesizing the new and historic into an exceptional training and performance space.

The Alberta Ballet has made an international name for itself as a great innovator through the creation and performance of critically acclaimed interpretations of the music of contemporary artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, and Elton John. Besides a successful ballet company, they operate a ballet school that trains future generations of full-time professional dancers through an immersive program, and part-time, recreational students. Previously the School and the Company functioned in inadequately sized and separately located facilities.

GEC completed a feasibility study to determine if the Ballet’s plans for consolidation of their operations as well as plans for the next 20 years of growth could be located on the current Company site. The site is in a spectacular location on 18th Avenue SW, adjacent St. Mary’s Cathedral, and backing onto the Elbow River.

The new headquarters for the Alberta Ballet will house all their activities in one facility that makes the most of its site and will provide a lively, active venue to fuel their creativity. The building will incorporate the historic sandstone and brick Canadian Northern Railway Station and will feature state-of-the-art dance studios fronting 18th Avenue, and studios that face the Elbow River and Lindsay Park beyond. Between the studios will be the dressing rooms and facilities to support the Company, the School and the Wardrobe Department.
