In summer of 2022, GEC completed a comprehensive modernization and renovation of the Lethbridge Airport (YQL) terminal building. Included in this transformative project is the design and construction of an entirely new hold bag screening system and a new check-in hall, including take-away belts, millwork, airline offices, and ticketing kiosks. The modernization of the airport is designed to meet the immediate needs of Lethbridge citizens and regional visitors while allowing for, and promoting, growth of airport operations. As almost all passengers will be originating at YQL, our solution was a bespoke experience for all guests, where the PAX experience is comforting and welcoming to travelers departing and arriving; where flying from Lethbridge means getting to the airport early so you can enjoy pre-flight amenities in the hold room and unwind before you catch your flight, and where arriving in the baggage hall feels like arriving at home.

As part of the scoping and pre-design phases of the project, GEC undertook a detailed building assessment, and engaged with affected stakeholders to determine the extent of work that was required to completely modernize the entire facility, and fit within the capital budget expenditure for the airport. We designed this process specifically to blend the needs of the airport with capital funding while developing construction phasing and decanting plans that would have the minimum impact on tenants, airlines, YQL operations, and passengers. GEC worked closely with the City and airport operators to develop project phasing that would best balance the needs of City administration, operational needs, and the PAX experience.
