GEC Architecture is honoured to announce Edmonton Transit’s Stadium LRT Station was awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC)’s 2024 National Urban Design Award for Urban Architecture. The National Urban Design Awards are awarded every two years to recognize the important link between architects, planners, and landscape architects in achieving successful urban design. We are honoured to be recognized with our teammates at RJC, Stantec, Hatch, ISL, Platinum Engineering and WSP for their hard work and collaboration on this project.
The National Urban Design Awards, presented biennially, celebrate the collaborative achievements of architects, planners, and landscape architects in successful urban design. The six urban design categories focus on raising awareness of the important role urban design has for Canadians and celebrating high-quality designs that successfully improve the quality of life for the community. This year, there were 12 recipients of awards, including GEC Architecture, for our work on the City of Edmonton’s Stadium LRT Station.
As one of the original City of Edmonton LRT Stations, Stadium Station was no longer meeting the needs of Edmonton’s growing population. The significant transformation combined new and existing infrastructure to create a brighter, more accessible, safer public space for transit users and community members. Today, Stadium Station’s refreshed design transforms the transit infrastructure from a barrier between communities into an urban hub that brings residents and commuters together. The new station and plaza serve as an instigator for future development, supporting a diverse array of uses, enhancing connectivity and accessibility, rethinking safety and comfort, and fostering stronger links between communities.
