A renewed civic heart where all Edmontonians can gather, celebrate, and belong.

For decades, City Hall Plaza and Fountains have been a stage for Edmonton’s civic life—a place to gather, celebrate milestones, and simply enjoy the rhythm of daily life downtown.

First opened in 1992, the plaza has now been reimagined for a new era. The design honours the spirit of the original—its arched fountains, tree-lined walkway, and balanced layout—while opening the space to be more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming than ever before. The entire plaza was gently lifted, creating a seamless slope that provides barrier-free access to the fountains and City Hall’s front doors. Today, every visitor, regardless of ability, can take part in the city’s shared celebrations.

At its heart, the renewed plaza is designed for flexibility. The iconic fountain transforms with the seasons: in summer, a wading pool and splash of water where children play; in winter, a skating rink alive with energy and light. Year-round, the space adapts—hosting festivals, ceremonies, and community gatherings that reflect the diverse spirit of Edmonton.

Thoughtful details are everywhere, from natural granite surfaces that catch the prairie light to carefully placed tactile strips that guide movement through the space. More than design refinements, these choices are gestures of welcome, making the plaza safe, functional, and beautiful for all.

City Hall Plaza is more than a civic landmark—it is Edmonton’s renewed gathering place. A space for connection, celebration, and everyday belonging at the heart of the city.

City Hall Plaza blends playful water features with inviting spaces for rest, conversation, and community connection.
