Heavy Metal Place is more than a sports facility—it’s Spruce Grove’s new civic heart. Purpose-built to bring together recreation, culture, learning, and mobility, the building balances energy and identity in a city that’s growing fast and planning smart. It’s a space designed to move with its people, alive with possibility from the moment you arrive.
At its core is the Thompson Family Arena—a 1,400-seat venue and future home of the Junior “A” Spruce Grove Saints of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). Complete with a full seating bowl, private boxes, a party lounge, and mezzanine views, the arena is ready to host everything from playoff games to concerts, trade shows, and citywide celebrations. A second, 250-seat community arena offers flexible ice time for youth sports, practice, and everyday play.
But Heavy Metal Place extends well beyond the ice. A full-service branch of the Spruce Grove Public Library, a black box theatre, the LJL Galleries Community Art Gallery, an indoor running track, universal dressing rooms, and a pro shop all share a central lobby that encourages connection across programs. Just steps away, the new Spruce Grove Transit Centre links the building to the broader region, making it a true hub for both activity and access.
From the start, the project was shaped by deep collaboration—GEC worked closely with the City and local groups to make sure every space reflects community needs and aspirations. Designed with sustainability and longevity in mind, Heavy Metal Place pairs performance with care, ensuring it will serve Spruce Grove for generations to come.
Delivered through a community-driven process, Heavy Metal Place proves that when you build for everyone, everyone shows up.
“What a great day to officially open this incredible new facility to our community… With both outstanding recreation and cultural amenities under one roof, this building reflects who we are as a community—a place that values connection, activity, creativity, and coming together.”
