Inspiring leaders.
The Peter Lougheed Hall is a distinct student residence intended to provide an enriching experience that fosters and supports students on a developmental path towards leadership. The Hall provides a range of student-oriented amenities to foster academic achievement and establish a sense of community. The City Room, main Dining Hall, and cohort spaces play an integral role in connecting students with leaders from around the world to share knowledge and drive excellence.
GEC began working with the University of Alberta in developing their vision after winning a design competition in July 2013. The competition challenged us to create a building that captures “the spirit of Alberta and the West—past, present and future”. Drawing from the project’s spectacular site above the river, the community spaces are physically, visually, and figuratively an extension of Edmonton’s river valley.
We organized the residence around the central courtyard, designing it to create a sense of community for the students who live in the residence and function as a neighbourhood amenity for students within East Campus Village. Student residences are situated on floors above, arranged into forum clusters of 11 bedrooms, each with a community room and distinguished by private study areas with window seats to provide for contemplation and repose.
